A Washi Tape Dollshouse

At the end of last year I took home a dollhouse from a teacher's classroom at my daughters school, planning on doing a quick reno on it for her. Here are some before shots...

I got the kids doing a bit of sanding and then painted the whole thing white.

Then on the last weekend of the school holidays I realised I better quickly get it finished! I used scrapbooking card to wallpaper the top rooms, and then just painted the bottom floors back walls. Then I had the brainwave to use the new Scotch® Washi and Magic Tapes to tape the floors (I especially love the blue patterned magic tape that I think looks like a mediterranean tiled floor and the black and white chevron washi tape floor which I can just imagine on some stylish New York loft apartment)

As I was taping the floors I was checking facebook for something and up came this photo from the Small Acorns facebook page of a dollshouse made out of cardboxes and decorated with pictures from magazines.  Can't believe I hadn't thought of doing this before as I was thinking the dollshouse was going to be a bit sad without any furniture! So I got my stash of Your Home and Garden magazines out (so glad I hadn't got rid of them when we moved) and had heaps of fun going through them for pictures  that would work for each room. 

My favourite pictures are the bookcases as they really look 3D on the walls of the dollhouse, and I love the couches in the lounge too. Some things are a little bit out of proportion and the upstairs especially is quite random but all in all it looks pretty cool and costs a lot less than my previous dollhouse!!

Here are some more pics...I used modpodge to stick them all to the walls, and then a layer of modpodge over all the walls and floors to seal them.

I was finding it hard to find a kitchen that would fit under the window and then I spotted this cute kitchen by Emily Henderson that LeeAnn Yare shared on her facebook page so I printed it out- easy!

I found out that the lovely painting I cut out for this bedroom is from the home of Hayley who runs The Art Room Limited- she spotted it when I shared a few pics on my facebook page! 

It was pretty fiddly cutting out this bunting but a lot quicker than making my own still! The mini art works on the left and right were from an ad for wallpapers in one of the magazines.

I thought of Miss Molly Coddle when I cut out the turquoise peacock chair for the kitchen :)

So if you are wanting to do a dollshouse reno this is a great option- you could even washi or magic tape the walls- a lot easier and quicker than paint or wallpapering! (and if you want to change it it's really easy to remove the tape). This would be a great activity to do with kids too, just give them a shoe box and let them decorate it!

One of the things I really love doing (and something I hope to do more of this year) is helping teachers set up and organise their classrooms. Last year I got to help a teacher at the end of the year declutter and sort all of her classroom stuff as she was moving classrooms and I loved it. I only wish my work with the Scotch Expression Tapes Promotion had started a bit earlier as I would have had a ball using the new Scotch tapes in her classroom! Washi Tape Back to School Ideas

Every now and then I get the urge to do a fun lunchbox for the kids, maybe once a term or so. Here's one I made for Valentines Day last year, and one I made for Easter

So with all this talk of washi tape I thought I'd have some fun and make a washi tape lunchbox, especially as Amelie and Stella have become nearly as obsessed with washi tape as I am! So using my Scotch® washi tape, masking tape and magic tape I made a lunch box up so you can get some ideas if you want to have some fun yourself. 

Here are the details

*meusli bar with masking tape and a message on it

*box of raisins covered in washi tape

*banana with washi tape and name on it

*pieces of fresh pineapple

* cheese cubes and crackers with a washi tape flag toothpick for the cubes

* sandwich wrapped in greaseproof paper with washi tape wrapped around it (had to use sellotape at the back of this though as the washi tape doesn't actually stick to the greaseproof paper!)

*spooon decorated with magic tape

I also used the magic tape to label her drink bottle and a packet of tissues. Because the magic tape is like a matte sellotape it will hold up better in the dishwasher than washi tape, so it's great for labelling anything for back to school e.g lunchboxes, drink bottles, containers, and any stationery items your child brings to school as well.

I also used some of the Scotch® Shipping Tape and the magic tape to cover a school book - so easy and you could get really creative using all the different tapes to cover school books. Older children could even do this themselves and then match up the tapes to their stationery labels as well. The shipping tape is perfect for this as it is waterproof and really durable, and comes in heaps of cool colours and patterns.

So there you go, a few ideas for using the Scotch® decorative tapes for your 'back to school' jobs. You can find them all at Warehouse Stationery or online with Fishpond- they have heaps of new Scotch® tapes on there- I am loving this Alphabet one!

Washi tape Kids Art and Craft ideas

Here's my next post as part of the Scotch® Expressions Tape "Make It Amazing"promotion -ideas for Kids Art and Craft using Scotch® washi tape and the new Scotch® magic tape- it's like sellotape but not as sticky so can be repositioned, and comes in a lovely matte finish. Here are some of the activities we've done in the last few weeks- if you want to get more ideas check out my pinboard 'I love washi tape' on Pinterest.

Washi Tape initial art

This is a fun activity- great for young children to learn the letter of their name and nice and easy to set up too!

On a piece of paper use washi tape (or low adhesive masking tape) to make the letter of their name.

Then draw/scribble all over the piece of paper

Gently peel off the washi tape (Tip:  put your fingers quite close to the tape as you are peeling it off and peel slowly)

Trim up the art work and use washi tape to make a frame to go around it. 

Washi Tape Band-aids

My kids have a bit of an obsession with bandaids so they loved making these- just stick a couple of strips of washi tape over the top of a bandaid, and then trim around the edge of the bandaid- easy and very cute!

Washi Tape Stickers

\This is my favourite art and craft activity- how cool to be able to make your own stickers!

You need some baking paper, washi tape and/or Scotch® magic tape and some craft punches. Simply cut the baking paper into manageable pieces, stick the tapes onto the pieces, and then punch out the shapes. Tip: for younger children you might need to do the punching part with the larger punches, and also be careful peeling off the baking paper so the sticker doesn't come apart - the close you tape the strips together the better it will be for the sticker to stay together.

We used some heart stickers to decorate this plastic cup for Valentines Day.

Washi Tape Wooden Letter Craft

You can buy these wooden letters from Warehouse Stationery, Spotlight or other crafty stores. Simply cover the letter in wash tape, you could do all one colour like this one, or a striped one would look cool too. This is a little bit fiddly with the curves in the letter so this would be a great activity for older children.

 

Washi Tape Crowns

I saw these gorgeous crowns on Pinterest but Amelie and Stella wanted to make big crowns that went around their heads so I just gave them a large strip of paper and they taped strips of washi and magic tape to the paper, then they cut out a crown shape at the top and attached a strip of paper at the back to make the crown big enough to go around their head.

Washi Tape Bunting

Amelie (6) and Stella (4) made this washi tape bunting to hang off balloons but in the end it looked cute just hanging by the window. I've found this shape bunting is easier for younger kids to make than the triangle shape.

This greeting card bunting is a good activity for older children as the bunting flags can be a bit fiddly- just tape pieces of washi or magic tape over a piece of string and cut into triangles.

Washi Tape Weaving

And finally Amelie came up with this idea to make washi tape weaving after seeing a tissue box with a weaved pattern on it! I did this washi weaving though as it is another art/craft activity suited to older children as it is a bit of a challenge!
