My creative space: lap quilts

Well it's been a while since I've been here but life has been pretty crazy lately (well no more than usual with 3 kiddies I guess) but I thought it was about time I wrote a 'my creative space' post as it feels like ages since I wrote one! Am feeling pretty sad at the moment about the terrible oil spill happening here in our beautiful Bay of Plenty  (local writer Jenny Rudd has written about it here)  but I'm going to share my quilts to take my mind off it for now.
I made these little lap quilts a while ago for the girls to snuggle under when watching TV or reading a book. They are without a doubt my most favourite thing I have made so far for the girls. They love their 'quilties' and drag them around the house all day using them for games and snuggles. And as my friend said- much better than dragging their entire duvet around the house! Seeing them cuddling them in bed at night makes my heart sing- funny how it is when you make something that they really love-  it is the best feeling :)
Lining up all their soft toys underneath their quilts -this took them aaaages - always a good thing ;)
They didn't take long to make - probably 2 hours tops for each one. I made a patchwork top then used some needled cotton for the inner and some printed flannel for the back. I followed this tutorial from Cat Taylor (the same one I used for Jack's baby playmat/blanket) which is really easy to follow.
Helping me lay out the pattern for the patchwork top
Will have to make a start on one for Jack next. Hope you're all having a good week and thanks for reading.

Lovely! It seems such an art, getting the quilt blocks (I think thats the name?) to work together-the big spots and rainbow stripes look wonderful together!

Life is Crazy busy with 3 kids. I've been meaning to sew mine some quilts for far too long now and hearing how much you girls love theirs you inspired me to make a start. They are gorgeous!

They're gorgeous, our kids just use handtowels and an old polar fleece blanket!- I might make them something special after reading this. Please, what is the colour on the wall in the top photo? Hopefully our daughter's room will be re painted soon and I like that shade- works well with red and pink : )

Amazing looking quilts and loved the pattern combinations. That game is something my daughter does too and yes I love it because it does take ages, she like to chat to them and tell them off for not lying still/straight so funny!

So so sad watching events in Tauranga unfold and hearing reports from friends and ex-colleagues. Hoping and praying that the beaches and wildlife will not suffer too much more and will return to their natural beauty soon.
Love your quilts, and so special that the girls are so proud of them!

I just drove past the beach and saw frozen hamburgers and deer hides everywhere. Thank you for mentioning my post, I'm flattered!

I'm sad to hear about the spill too, just awful. Your lap quilts are lovely, I am going to make one of these one of these days. I have just made cushions so far for my kids, but they are so attached to them and have to cuddle them in bed every night, so sweet :)Sam

Thinking of you guys with the oil spill, what an incredible tragedy. You live in such a beautiful part of our country and to see the awful pictures on the news. Thank you for sharing your lovely quilts. So nice the girls have something special handmade by their Mum.

My daughter lines all her dolls under her quilts too.

Beautiful quilts and such a great idea to make them smaller and easily transportable :-)
So sorry to hear about the spill as well. All those poor birds :-(

Love the quilts Megan. Funny how once you start sewing the list of things you want to make just gets longer and longer! Mine is growing day by day, and have just added quilts to it!
Gutted about oil spill too...so sad for our community.

They are adorable and LOVE the lining all their dolls up in bed. Hope they play that game every day at least three times :)

The oil spill looks horrific and have been thinking about you and your love for the Beach :( Am hoping that at least some of these crates are filled with lovely crafty stuff from afar and it all washes up on the beach for you.

Hi Megan. Would you mind sharing where you buy needled cotton? I've never quilted before so I haven't heard of it before. Is that its usual name? thank you - am thinking I will have to try a quilt, yours are so lovely!
